Toshiba HD-EP10

Announced at the March 2007 CeBIT trade fair at the Hannover Messe, the EP-10 is being touted for a May release. But don't hold your breath, remember the protracted wait we've had in the UK for the release of previous Toshibas ?

Features include the aforementioned 1080p output (as opposed to the 1080i output of the E1), upscaling DVD-Video to 720p, 1080i and 1080p, support for the lossless audio compressions Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio (but no analogue 5.1 audio-out outputs).

More details as they become available.

Due for release in May 2007, Toshiba is planning to launch a mid-range HD-DVD deck to "meet increasing consumer demand for a budget 1080P HD-DVD player".

To quote Toshiba's Olivier Van Wynendaele, Deputy General Manager, Consumer Products Division, "The HD-EP10 raises the bar yet again. We want consumers to experience the highest HD resolution currently available at a price that's right for the market - and that's exactly what the HD-EP10 achieves."

Offering the same 1080P output as its bigger brother the XE1, but at an affordable € 699 price point, the EP10 will offer virtually the same specs as the XE1, in a plastic instead of metal design. The HD-E1 will be retained as the entry-level HD-DVD player, however the new arrival may well push the E1 's price down further.
